About the Author
William L. Fisher is the Leonidas T. Barrow Centennial Chair in Mineral Resources and Professor Emeritus at The University of Texas at Austin, in the Department of Geological Sciences. He was the first dean of the Jackson School of Geosciences, which he was instrumental in establishing as well as in securing its substantial endowment. He was the longest serving director of both the Geology Foundation and the Bureau of Economic Geology.
At the Bureau his role as state geologist put him at the forefront of state resource management and national energy policy. He was the assistant secretary of energy and minerals under President Gerald Ford, served on President Ronald Reagan’s White House Science Council, and was elected to the National Academy of Engineering. In addition to his generous contributions to countless professional societies, Fisher has published extensively and supervised or co-supervised more than 150 graduate students. many of whom have enjoyed top-ranking careers in the geosciences throughout the world.
Fisher earned his master’s degree and doctorate in geology at the University of Kansas. His bachelor’s degree, also in geology, is from Southern Illinois University. He holds honorary doctorates from Colorado School of Mines, Southern Illinois University, and Flinders University. Bill Fisher lives in Austin, Texas, with his wife, Marilee.
