About This Publication
Publication of this atlas, the final and southernmost atlas in the Bureau’s coastal environmental geology mapping series, marks the completion of this long-term Bureau research program. Begun in 1969, the project produced seven atlases, collectively encompassing more than 20,0002 miles of the Texas Coastal Zone, from Louisiana to Mexico. The Environmental Geologic Atlas series has become a principal source of information for citizens, firms, and governmental agencies involved in Coastal Zone issues.
As do the other six volumes in this series, this atlas includes an environmental geologic map (scale 1:125,000) and special-use maps on physical properties, environments, and biologic assemblages, land use, mineral and energy resources, active processes, man-made features and water systems, rainfall, discharge and surface salinity, and topography and bathymetry. Mapping was accomplished by use of aerial photographs, topographic maps, low-level aerial reconnaissance, and on-the-ground field work.
