Purchased in 1938 by Fred W. Shield, the Shield Ranch comprises 6800 acres, mostly in Travis County and secondarily in Hays County. The ranch is well known for its conservation practices and is a model of good stewardship of Texas Hill Country land. Articles in the guidebook discuss Barton Creek, archeology, caliche soils, hydrogeology, geology, natural resources, and birds.
